Working for the Weekend

Did I mention that my new job has Fridays off from the Friday before Memorial Day until Labor Day? Which means this is the last day of my work week. Am I excited? Yes. Do I have big plans or anything? No.

I do have plans. Though not too exciting. Plans include:

Washing bedding for the baby's room
Packing the bag for the hospital*
Putting in the car seat*
Watching Beverly Hills 90210, Season 4
Sleeping in
Swimming, maybe? Possibly? Oh, I hope so.

*Childbirth class suggested that these two matters be taken care of early, Just In Case. And also, so that we just plain won't have to do it later. Which seems logical, because this was mentioned in childbirth class two weeks ago and already I've put it off until now. I have no idea how to put in a car seat. . . will there be directions in the box? ALSO, any tips on stuff that should/should not be in the bag for the hospital?

Baby Face

We did 3d/4d ultrasound this weekend. It was so cool. This is our son. He had his feet up in front of his face like that the whole time, so all the pictures of his little face are just this one side.

Childbirth Class Recap

1. They talked about "what kind of laboring mother will you be?" Of course they showed the angry looking lady, the stressed out lady, and then the blissful earth mother type. AND talked about how much easier everything will seem if you just bliss out. Um, I don't think I'm going to be the blissed out type. I don't really think I'm going to be the screaming "YOU DID THIS TO ME" type either, but "blissful" seems like a stretch.

2. During the first class they mentioned that they monitor mom and baby the whole time. Good, good. During the second class we learned HOW mom and baby are monitored. See, after the cervix gets good and opened they insert this thing that gets attached to the baby's head. Even hearing that didn't seem so bad. In my mind I guess it was like a suction cup or something. Oh poor, poor naieve me. It's this little thing that they TWIST and it will be, for lack of a better word, screwed to his head. (Note: the thing is not a screw, but actually looks more like the end of a spring)

3. Mom is monitored with a catheter. Am I the only person that thought catheters had something to do with peeing? Well, at any rate, this is inserted next to the baby and monitors contractions. But, they just put that thing in there and I guess it stays on it's own because there was no mention of twisting it or attaching it to anything.

4. We were shown what a vaccum is. Again, I feel like I know nothing. They had to use a vaccum to help with my sister's last baby and I literally pictured a big thing reminiscent of the vaccum you would use on your carpet. Needles to say, this is NOT what they use.

5. Forceps. Um, yeah, I hope it doesn't come to that. Those things looked like they jumped into the room straight from 1950. And of course there was the girl in the class who said she had a relative who had brain damage from forceps being used on him during birth.

6. The same girl ALSO said that her friend's labor was so fast the nurse had to give her an epidural because the doctor couldn't get there fast enough. When the nurse teaching the class said this had to be wrong, because nurses are not allowed to give an epidural in any situation, the girl kind of argued with the nurse. Finally her husband was like "maybe your friend was WRONG." The wife shut up, but you could tell she still thought she was right. I don't think the nurse likes her too much.

Next week: Comfort Techniques during labor.

Class, Babies, Stretch Marks, Bellybuttons

Childbirth Class, Part Two is tonight. I'm not sure what we are going to cover. It seems like the first class was an overview. So, my guess is that now we are going to go over stuff in more detail. All I know for sure is that my husband was freezing last time (not me. Have I mentioned that I am hot. All. The. Time?) and one couple is pretty annoying.

I can set something on my stomach and watch it move when the baby moves. This is entertaining to me for way longer than you would expect.

Yesterday I looked in the mirror at about 3 in the afternoon and thought "you know, I'm doing okay as far as stretch marks go." I have a few, but not too bad. Then around 7 I took a shower and there it was. . . a shiny new stretch mark just to the right of my belly button.

Speaking of belly buttons, mine has not popped out and I am thinking that it is not going to. It has gotten shallower, but will I really grow enough in the next 11 weeks to make it pop all the way out??

The Day That Went Awry

1. Overslept. I woke up with exactly ten minutes to get to work.

2. Breakfast. There is MASSIVE construction going on with the highway nearest my apartment. In order to make my drive to work faster I cut throught a Burger King parking lot. This morning (even though running late) I stop for a biscuit with bacon and cheese. (Don't ask. . . I am just not a fan of the "folded egg"). When I get to work the receipt reads "Sausage Egg & Cheese Croissant." The bag actually held a croissant with sausage, egg, cheese, AND bacon. It was like a cholesterol nightmare. I have no idea what was going on in that Burger King this morning. But, after peeling off the egg and sausage it wasn't that bad.

3. Snack. We take two 15 minute breaks a day here. I forgot to bring a snack today. For either break. And then, no one took the afternoon break, so I didn't either. I didn't want to go sit in the breakroom alone, with nothing even to eat.

4. Phone calls. My grandma called TWICE while I was still trying to sleep. Then she called again while I was working. Her voicemail said she wanted the "check" on me. I appreciate that she is concerned, but really. . . So then I call so she will not worry (i.e. stop calling) and she can't hear a WORD I say. There was something wrong with phone PLUS I am at work and didn't want to talk loud.

5. Mail. I get five bills ready to mail only to realize that the price of stamps went up a penny. Blah. I did not drive to the post office. Luckily, this afternoon I learned that they sell stamps here in the office.

6. Lunch. I spilled Dr. Pepper all over myself. Then my food gave me a stomach-ache.

I am just so glad that it is Friday. I really do like this new job, a lot, but this weekend is much needed. AND my BestBuy card came in the mail yesterday, so I will surely be shopping for a computer this weekend.

Having Not Fallen Off the Face of the Earth

*Still no computer at home! Updating from Blackberry sucks, which would explain the lack of updates over the past. . . month? Has it been a month already? Hopefully we'll be getting our new computer in the next week or so.

*I love my new apartment/town/job.

*My husband moved into the apartment with me about a week or so after I moved in. Things aren't perfect, but the situation is getting better.

*Our first childbirth class was Tuesday. Why is it that the woman who is not getting an epidural felt it neccessary to go into a lecture on why she is not getting one. No one who is getting one felt a need to go on forever about their reasoning. Geez people, to each his own, you know?

*My new doctor is great. He is married, with kids, but somehow reminds me of the singing brother in The Break-Up. When my husband asked how the appointment went I told him good, but "he wanted me to do the part of the kick-drum, but I said no."

*I finally gained weight with this whole pregnancy business. Between weeks 23-27 I gained 8 pounds. So, officially still down 3 from when I first got pregnant, but I don't feel so worried that the poor baby is starving.

*Had another ultrasound last week, he is not starving, by the way. The tech said his size is normal.

*I am in the 3rd! Trimester. I cannot believe it. Officially I can eat again, I am so sore in the between the legs/hips/lower back area, and the baby kicks all the time.

*Foods that are currently amazing: powdered sugar donuts, cheeseburgers (mustard and pickles only), corn dogs, buffalo chicken wraps (made at home: grilled chicken chopped up and covered in Franks Red Hot, wrapped in a burrito size tortilla with a slice of 2% cheese), brownies. I am so hungry at the moment. . .

*Most difficult task: getting out of bed to pee in the middle of the night. I feel so unwieldy at those moments. It is such an effort, like my bladder must weigh 15 pounds.

*Lastly, do any of you watch Lost? Because Holy Crap! I couldn't believe it when Jack got out of bed and Kate was in the shower. AND THEN his DAD is the cabin with CLAIRE??? I'm so glad they've gotten me all excited and there are only two more weeks left before hiatus. LOST is such a tease.
